Thanks for your help on this guys, you were extremely fast to look into it and you found the problem much quicker than I could have.
"I mercilessly deleted all the code that tracks visits and almost instantly the site sped up enormously. Now it's not only back to normal, but actually faster than ever, so it looks like this bit of code is what's been causing the site to trundle along at a snails pace for quite some time.
